Topper Open Meeting 2005
(report as published in Yachts and
Yachting
)
The annual ASC Topper open meeting was held in almost
identical conditions to last year, in a gusty force 4-5 which gave
almost all of the 22 competitors a swim at some point during the day.
The westerly wind direction allowed for a beat the full length of the
reservoir, which made for some tactical racing and very tired legs.
The first race saw Richard Henderson take an early lead
from Ian Wright and Finley Barnham, and these three positions were held
until the finish. Further down the fleet there were some spectacular
capsizes at the gybe mark which PRO Jon Charlton had set right in front
of the spectators for maximum entertainment!
In race two last years winner Piers Arnold surged back
from an uncharacteristic 7th place in the first race to lead from start
to finish. Once again Wright recorded a solid second place over 3rd
placed Barnham, with Henderson relegated to what would prove to be a
decisive 5th place.
After lunch the deciding race was sailed with almost all
competitors finding the energy to do battle one more time. Ian Wright
recovered from a poor first lap to come through and take the win,
benefiting from unfortunate capsizes from his closest rivals in the
dying stages of the race. Henderson couldn't quite catch Wright and
finished second in the race, giving him equal overall points. Wright
just clinched overall victory however when the discard was taken into
consideration. Barnham placed 3rd in the race and tied on overall points
with Arnold, who had a disappointing last race after leading the first
lap. Arnold just held on to 3rd place overall however, by virtue of
having won the second race.
ASC Commodore Trenica King
awarded prizes down to 5th place, and competitors thanked the club for a
well-run event, with special mention to the crews of all three support
boats, who had been kept extremely busy throughout the day.
